Knights Templar and Freemasonry whats the difference between them?

I've seen almost all of these shows on the History Channel, National Geographic,and the Discovery Channel about the Knights Templar and Freemasonry. I know that many of the early leaders of our country including several signers of the Declaration of Independence where Freemasons. I also know that the Knights Templar began in Europe as a group of fighting monks. What are some of the other difference between them? Also what are some of the things they have in common?
