What connotation in Arabic does "كافر" have?

To you, what does it mean because there seems to be many synonyms. I would love to have godless or atheist as a tattoo, and I realize if its in Arabic, it will be a little bit more contrasting with the origin of the language and what I'm trying to say. Thank you!
