If a covalent Polar molecule is symmetrical, does that mean it becomes non polar?

I have a science test on monday and i need to no that if a molecule has elements with equal electronegative forces (which would make it polar) but is symmetrical, does that mean it automatically becomes non polar in all cases? And also how can you tell if a molecule is symmetrical just by reading its formula... Thanks
