Why do many liberals today compare themselves to our Founding Fathers? Do they have anything in common?

Points well made... as the religious points have been "cleared up" already it is hardly arguable that a major reason for the "breaking off" from england was religious. People were very religious and you can see those signs, stated or unstated through many of the doents and law.
